“He turns and before he can say anything else, before I can even see his face with its dead eyes and long teeth, I am outside with the door banging against the cabin wall behind me. It is so cold my breath is knocked from my lungs and little does not escape is grabbed in my throat so I fall into the snow, coughing, not even two steps between myself and the cabin. I hear my father approach with thunderous footsteps and I squeeze my eyes shut, ready to feel the axe or the nails of his hands tear into my back.”
